Course Information

This course will be conducted in-person, and I will be using Canvas to share files, document grades, and make announcements. We will meet in person in Business Building B-125 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:35 pm. 

This is a 4 credit course, which means we will meet for about 4 hours a week in person. In addition, you can expect to spend about 8-12 hours per week on completing assignments and reviewing course materials, for a total commitment of 12-16 hours per week. 

Course Description

This class focuses on statistics as applied to the social sciences and includes such topics as measurement, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, the normal distribution curve, correlation, sampling, statistical inference, hypothesis testing and an introduction to analysis of variance.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to: 

• Understand such topics as measurement frequency distributions and the normal curve, measures of central tendency and variability, sampling and statistical inference, correlation, hypothesis testing, and ANOVA, as assessed by exams and homework assignments.
• Apply statistical concepts to real research examples, as assessed by exams and homework assignments.
• Select the statistical test appropriate for analyzing data presented in research simulations.

Accessing Course Materials

For sharing files and collecting assignments in this course, we will use the SBVC Canvas Learning Management System. You can log in to the system at https://sbccd.instructure.com/. It is a really good idea to go to settings in your account profile and make sure that you have set yourself up to receive emails, announcements, submission comments and updates on the calendar to your regular email (as well as through text if that works for you). The best way to access everything is using the MODULES link on the left. Each week will have a module with materials for that week.

Textbook

Our optional textbook (Beyer, 2021) Introduction to Statistics for Psychology is available as a free PDF file with optional weekly readings linked in each week’s module. You will need access to a computer with the internet to complete assignments outside of class. To keep your notes and classwork organized, you will need a 3-ring binder of at least 1 inch. You should have access to a pencil, paper, and scientific calculator - I have some to borrow.
