Note: This class is fully online with no on-campus meetings. Students will be required to complete online instructional content via Canvas. On the first day of class students must log into Canvas to access this course and receive initial information from the instructor (typically located on the announcement page of the course). Students should log on to Canvas Prior to the first day of class to access the presentation schedule. There will be occasional optional zoom meetings that will be announced in advance. These meetings are recorded and posted in canvas for you to view at your convenience. There is a zoom meeting the first day of class (see class announcements for details and link to join).
Course Description
This course examines the processes of socialization, focusing on the interrelationships of family, school, and community. Multiple societal contexts are examined. The course explores the role of the collaboration between family, community and schools in supporting children's development, from birth through adolescence.
Credit Type: Earned units for this course are applicable to an associate degree. Transferability: Course credit transfers to both CSU and UC. Departmental Advisory: ENGL 101 or ENGL 101H or READ 100. Note: This is a fully online class. Students will be required to complete online instructional content via Canvas. This class could offer some live online meetings, but students will have options on accessing that content. Students should log on to Canvas the first day of class to access classes.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Identify how the child develops within a system and is influenced by numerous factors of socialization including the role of the family, childcare, schooling, and the community.
- Compare and contrast diverse family structures, parenting styles, culture, tradition, and values and their impact upon children and youth.
- Describe the social issues, changes, and transitions that affect children, families, schools and communities.
- Develop appropriate strategies to assist families experiencing stress
- Explain the effects of age, gender, diverse abilities, language and culture, racial identify and ethnicity, socio economic status and institutions on children and families
- Analyze diverse practices, patterns and styles of communication, and demonstrate positive communication strategies that support all families.
- Identify appropriate community resources that support children and families including at risk populations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of legal requirements and ethical responsibilities of professionals working with all children and families.
- Examine advocacy strategies to influence public policy on behalf of children and families.
- Explore one’s own family history and examine how it affects one’s relationships with children and families.
- Identify theories of socialization that address the interrelationship of child, family, and community.
- Develop effective strategies that empower families and encourage family involvement in children’s development.

This is where you need to go. This is where you begin the class. All of the required links to the Cengage (Mind-Tap) eBook (i.e. chapter readings assigned), Chapter Introduction videos, PowerPoint files; links to video activities assigned, links to Mind-Tap assignments, Chapter Quizzes, and other activities are embedded within each of the Modules (Week 1 through Week 17).
The "Modules" tab is also located on the menu bar to your left. Click on the "modules' link, to find each Weekly Module Assignments (Modules Week 1- Week 17) and due dates for each of the assignments which include Discussion Board Assignments, Mind-Tap Activities and Chapter Tests, Written Paper Assignments and the Final.

These dates are set up for students to work on assignments, discussion boards, etc., together every Wednesday during the entire class from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
