Course Description:

This course provides practical and valid information about solutions to managerial problems through research findings, theory and current successful practices. Detailed analysis of basic managerial functions including planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling is made. Emphasis is placed on the technical, interpersonal, conceptual, diagnostic and political managerial skills needed to succeed as a manager in a domestic or global business.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the term manager, and identify different types of managers.

  2. Evaluate the importance of multinational corporations and outsourcing in international business.

  3. Examine the demands that information technology places on the manager’s job.

  4. Define the philosophical principles behind business ethics.

  5. Explain how planning contributes to business success.

  6. Differentiate between non-programmed and programmed decisions.

  7. Define the bureaucratic form of organization, and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.

  8. Illustrate the components of organizational staffing.

  9. Compare leadership and management, and contrast the skills that contribute to each.

  10. Explain the relationship between motivation, performance, and commitment.

  11. Discuss the steps in the communication process, and the major communication barriers in organizations.

  12. Identify various types of teams and groups; compare self-managed teams to project groups.

  13. Identify the factors that contribute to poor performance, and the control techniques for managing ineffective performers.

  14. Define the techniques for improving work habits and time management.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

  • Textbook readings and lecture presentations/notes
    • Read through each chapter weekly. The information given in the book will corollate directly with your quizzes and discussion forums. In weeks 4,8,12, and 15, you will be reading and quizzed on 2 chapters. Be sure to plan accordingly.
  • Course Requirements Checklist
    • After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the
      related checklist found in Modules/Getting Started by end of day Thursday of week 1.
  • Discussion Board Forums 
    • The student is required to provide a thread of 250–500 words in response to the
      provided prompt for each discussion by Thursday end of day the week the assignment is due. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads in at least 150 words each by the end of class week. There will be no Discussion Forum on weeks 4, 8, 12, and 15. The grading will be as follows: The initial response to the chosen question will be scored up to 24 points. The replies will be scored up to 10 points a piece. This allows a total score possible of 44 points. I will be grading these after the week ends and updating the scores based on the timeliness, quality of the answers, the number of words, and responses that are given.
  • Quizzes
    • There will be a quiz given for each chapter of reading that you are assigned. They will be a selection of 20 True/False and multiple-choice questions taken from the content of the chapter. In week 4, week 8, week 12, and week 15, you will have two chapters to cover, so there will be two quizzes due that week. There will be no discussion forum due those weeks.

    • Quizzes (18 at 30 points each) = 540
