Prerequisites: None.  It is highly recommended that students entering this course take Multimedia Foundation.

Catalog Description:

User Experience Design (UX) focuses on the quality of experience a person has when interacting with a specific design. UX Design relates to the needs and wants of the user, as well as ease-of-use, and designs for the best possible user experience.

Course Description:

An introduction to the concepts and processes of planning interactive projects that solve business and user needs. Students research users, goals, competition, and content, and develop the navigation structure, process flow, layouts and labeling systems that best address these needs. Students prepare and present a professional user experience proposal which is either for a website or application.

Course Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to…

Describe the relationship between different stages and components of the user experience.

  • Identify terms used in the industry
  • Define the critical issues and theoretical underpinnings of User Experience (UX) design
  • Create information architecture documentation

Define client, project, and user requirements

  • Identify behaviors and needs of a target user population
  • Apply research methods
  • Conduct competitive analysis
  • Create user personas
  • Employ timeline management

Develop the components for effective user experience

  • Design flow charts
  • Produce site maps and navigation structures
  • Create information ontologies and labeling systems
  • Develop Wireframes

Solve content organization problems

  • Assess user experience requirements for a design project

Usability Principles, HCI and Jacob Neilsen
Lecture:  Creative Briefs / Project Statements / Case Studies
Assignment:  Pick a website to redesign and Write a Project Statement. 
Discussion:  Post work and respond to two students

WEEK THREE
Research and Analysis
Lecture: Competitive Analysis & Site Audits
Assignment: Create your own competitive analysis.

How do I get a job in UX?
Lecture: Job Market
Assignment:  Find 3 jobs in UI/UX that interest you and write a paragraph about each job as to why you are qualified.

WEEK TWELVE
The Wide World of Usability Testing
Lecture:  Usability Testing
Revise Final Project
Assignment:  Conduct UX Testing on a peers project and write about your findings.

WEEK THIRTEEN
The Future
