Policies
Syllabus
- The entirety of this syllabus constitutes a binding contract between the instructor and student.
- By attesting on Canvas, via the first week “check-in” assignment, you will demonstrate understanding and agreement to the policies outlined hereunder.
- The instructor reserves the right to change any aspect of this syllabus, and the student will be notified of such changes, via Canvas Inbox, and the current version will always be available on Canvas.
- If the student objects to the changes, they will have 48 hours to make it known to the instructor in writing, via Canvas Inbox.
- The student must read and confirm understanding and agreement to the syllabus by 11:59 PM two days after the first day of class.
- Failure to submit the “check-in” will lead to being dropped from the class on the 4th
- Policies, assignment requirements, expectations, etc. may change during the semester. While this syllabus is generally binding, the instructor reserves the right to make changes within a reasonable amount of time for students to adjust to the new policies, requirements, expectations, etc.
- If students have questions about any policies, assignment requirements, and expectations, it is the student’s responsibility to make these questions and concerns known during the semester, and not wait until the end of the semester to issue grievances/complaints.
- College administration has a copy of this syllabus.
Drop Policy
First Week Check-in Assignment
- For all regularly enrolled students, the syllabus contract attestation “check-in” assignment is due two days after the term begins at 11:59 PM.
- Submission is to be posted in Canvas in the assignments tab.
- If this is not completed by the due date the student will be dropped from the course.
- All waitlisted students in the order of their wait list status will be contacted with an add code to replace the vacancy up to the maximum number of enrollees in the course.
Attendance/Course Inactivity Drop:
- This is an online course, therefore, there is no “attendance” in a traditional sense.
- There is no mandatory scheduled Zoom class.
- Lack of activity in the online course, defined as failing to turn in all assignments for two consecutive weeks, without a documentable/verifiable medical or legal emergency, may result in being dropped from the course.
- It is the student’s responsibility to drop/withdraw from the course if they no longer intend to participate in the course to avoid the risk of receiving a grade of “F” in the course.
Grading Policy
- Keep track of your grade through the Grades tab in Canvas.
- There will be no rounding up of any grades.
- Grade Scale: 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D, 50% F
Assignment Policies: Late Assignments/Make-Ups/Canvas Submissions/Rubrics
- Participation, Exams, Papers, and Presentations CANNOT be made up, unless you have a verifiable medical or legal emergency.
- Due Dates: All assignments are due on the due dates, as indicated in Canvas.
- Average Course Time Per Week: Plan on spending a minimum of 4-5 hours for this course per week.
- Assignment Submissions: It is the student's responsibilityto ensure that the assignment/file(s) submitted are whole/entire/viewable, so make sure you test what you have submitted.
- The instructor will not verify each of your submissions. If you can see the assignment as “Submitted” in your Canvas portal, then so can the instructor.
- Video links must be “Unlisted” or “Public” to be viewed by the instructor and/or other students. If the video is marked “Private” when the instructor is attempting to view/grade the assignment, it will be given a score of “0”.
- File formats must be Microsoft or PC compatible. All MAC/iPhone formats need to be submitted in PC/Microsoft formats.
- Cloud-based links to assignment submissions are not allowed other than Youtube.com or Loom.com. Google Docs, Samsung Cloud, or Apple-related cloud systems are not allowed.
- Submissions must be made in the Canvas system; any other means (email, Canvas Inbox, Assignment comments) will not be accepted.
- If rubrics are attached to an assignment, the rubric will be used to calculate the final grade of an assignment.
- The student is responsible for ensuring their assignment satisfies all the requirements of BOTH the assignment description, instructions, and the rubric requirements for full credit.
- The instructor will not engage in debates with students about their perception or definition of “fairness” of how the rubrics and point-values are structured. If you have concerns, make them known early in the semester or before you submit the assignment.
- If the student believes the instructor has made an error in grading, after having reviewed the instructor’s rubrical feedback, it is then the student's responsibility to demonstrate that the assignment fulfills all the requirements of the higher grade, as defined by the rubric. There will be no ad hoc gradations in score created if there is only partial satisfaction of the higher grade.
Self-Care and Mental Health
- Self-care can be defined as any activity which makes you “whole” again in times of stress, anxiety, depression, etc.
- Remember to strive for a well-balanced life between work, school, family, and community.
