Below are two short documents, excerpts from the work of two famous Black leaders of the turn of the 20th century -- Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Blacks faced many problems -- among them, loss of voting rights, "Jim Crow" racial separation laws, unequal treatment in the courts, and frequent lynchings and other violent attacks. The two authors below argued for very different strategies of dealing with these challenges. I'd like you to read the documents and write a short one-paragraph essay.
To gain context to help you understand the documents and the issues, you can look in Chapter 21 of the textbook -- or watch this short 4-minute excerpt from a documentary.
