Below is the text of the speech Lyndon Johnson gave at the University of Michigan commencement in 1964, in which he outlined his vision of the "Great Society."

As you read the speech, imagine you're one of the graduates in the audience -- that you have no idea what the future holds for you or the country. You'll be asked to write a paragraph about how you would have reacted at that time -- not how you react now, with the benefit of hindsight.
